Caring for Creation One Plastic Lid at a Time
Sr. Marie Gemar, who spoke to the adults this month, was a science teacher for 44 years, and currently is an expert on environmental impact and Laudato Si; the encyclical of Pope Francis on The Care of our Common Home.
Sr. Marie is sitting on our new bench, made from 100% recycled plastic lids and caps, 400 pounds of them, collected by you, the SSJP parishioners. Thanks to Mary O'Brien and Polly Antonelli, who drove to Indiana, to Green Tree Plastics to deliver our lids and pick up our bench.
Every second thousands of pounds of plastic are being buried in landfills where it will remain for centuries. Other companies destroy trees to make benches and outdoor furniture. By making benches out of plastic lids, we help solve two environmental problems at once, and live our faith by caring for God's creation!
You can see the bench in the gathering space over the next couple of weekends, and then find it in the Francis Butterfly Garden on the south side of the Faith Development Center.
